Many Japanese ask me, 'Do people in Canada wear their shoes inside their homes?'. And the answer is.. NO! Most people in Canada and America do not wear their shoes inside their homes. This may surprise many of you, but it's the truth!

Japanese see people on foreign TV programs and movies wearing their shoes in their homes. This is why many Japanese think that Canadian and American people do this, but actually we don't. In reality, we take our shoes off when we enter our homes.

The image of taking your shoes off and putting on slippers when entering a home, isn't particularly cool in North American society. Therefore, actors in movies and TV tend to leave their shoes on during scenes within the home.

Canadian and American mothers would be very angry with us if we kept our dirty shoes on after entering the home! Therefore, we have the same custom of taking our shoes off when entering the home.
